The 1875 Proof Three Dollar Gold Piece (Buy on eBay) was struck in proof format only and not minted for circulation. The issue boasts a low reported mintage of just 20 pieces, although it is believed a few more examples were struck in secrecy.
Most known examples display cameo and deep cameo contrast, but impaired surfaces are somewhat of a problem as is the case with many classic proof gold coins. No examples of the issue have graded higher than Proof 65.
One of the finest known examples graded PCGS PR65DCAM sold for $253,000 at an auction held in November 2006.
