Indian Princess Three Dollar Gold Piece Mintages

The Indian Princess Three Dollar Gold Pieces were minted from 1854 to 1889. Production took place at the Philadelphia, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mint facilities, although for most years production was confined to the Philadelphia Mint only.

The highest mintage occurred in the first year of issue for the series, when the Philadelphia Mint struck 138,618 pieces for circulation. Production levels soon declined and throughout the 1860’s fewer than 10,000 pieces were struck for each issue. Higher mintage years did occur in the following decade for the 1874 and 1878 Philadelphia issues.

Three years of the series boast an original reported mintage of fewer than 1,000 pieces. These dates are 1881, 1883, and 1885, with the 1881 issue having a mere 500 pieces struck. There are two additional issues of the series where the circumstances of the original mintage are unknown and very few pieces are known to exist. These issues include the 1855-S, which has only a single example known to exist, and the 1873 with an original mintage believed to be between 200 and 1,000 pieces.
